Swiftly flowing water makes gentle rippling sounds that calm me to my core. It is February 21st and 74 degrees in Vermont. Pachacuti comes to mind. It is a Quechuan word that means “the world turned upside down.” This feels true on a number of levels. Granted, change is the only constant in life but what seems to be happening now is something different. It is more than change; perhaps it is closer to upheaval.
I look up and feel the sun on my face, then see its reflection dancing on the water, creating ribbons of light, turning it into a magical silver river. I feel blessed to be able to sit on this bench on a Wednesday afternoon. I take a deep breath to let the soothing sounds and comforting warmth in. Now, the breeze caresses my face.
I am grateful that Vermont is my home and that it still has water. I pray for the water on our planet every morning. Now the breeze brings the smell of wet earth mixed with cedar; such an unexpected gift. I believe there is great power in prayer and ceremony. Both connect our intentions to realms that have far more power than we do in this realm.
Sitting at this river, connecting with the elements and all my senses fills my soul and nurtures my entire being. When your world turns upside down or inside out, turn to nature and the elements. They will heal you and bring you deep peace.
