This year, I felt the need to attend two Martin Luther King events. The service in Manchester, hosted by the Northshire Interfaith Council, began with a recording from one of Martin’s sermons. When I heard his voice, my heart cracked open. This was the highlight of the service for me.
In these turbulent times, strong spiritual leadership can make a huge difference. I feel that having a Spiritual perspective can offer a person more authentic guidance and support than what the secular world is able to provide because it goes deeper and has a wider perspective.
Right now, our souls need sustenance. Significantly reducing the amount of time spent on your screens is an important first step to shift gears and reduce some of the clutter in the mind to remember and reach the deeper aspects of yourself.
I invite you to answer this question honestly: “what are you more connected to – your soul or technology?” How does one feed their soul? What brings you deep peace? What lights you up from the inside? These things feed my soul: skiing at Prospect Mountain, spending time with the Battenkill River, dancing, listening to inspirational TED talks, and flying over and taking in the beauty of this great little state we live in. Discover and create ways to elevate your soul and then share those things with others.
The Martin Luther King event in Bennington inspired and uplifted a great number of people with music and song. Personally what gave me the most hope were the students; the ones who created posters to honor Martin Luther King, Jr. and the four young men of the Throwbacks. They performed with great passion, confidence and courage in their hearts. These things moved me the most.
If you spend a lot of time with the news, you may need to be reminded that there is good in the world. Set an intention to look for good every day. Remember that one person’s actions do make a difference, even if you are 16 and stand alone in your convictions. Ripples are real. To counter all the negativity you see, hear and read, I invite you to personally strive to make good decisions for the Earth, for all of humanity and for all living things. Think long range, not quick fix.
Continue to work to become the highest version of yourself. The world needs more impeccable and authentic people.
